Choose Your Post-Workout Meal Wisely

December 18, 2014

What you eat after a workout may be the most important meal of the entire day. Adjusting your post-workout cravings to the food you should be ingesting may be challenging, but with time you are bound to get used to it and actually enjoy it. Here are a few ideas to help you pick the right food after exercising.

The key to proper post-workout diet lies in protein and carbs.

Eggs are very rich in protein, contain less than 100 calories each and over 6 grams of protein.

Regardless of how you like to eat them, eggs provide the protein you need.

You can add them to a green salad or even a sandwich to get the right balance between carbs and protein.

Bananas actually contains plenty of carbs to replenish your body after a good workout. The carbs found in bananas are good for rebuilding muscle tissue and are rich in potassium, which is vital for heart function. You can have just one banana, or a banana-based fruit salad with oranges and blueberries.

Salmon contains the right amount of protein your body requires after a workout, and it helps rebuild muscles and increase performance. Salmon is considered a super-food and a brain food by many nutritionists due to the vitamins and minerals it contains. Salmon has fewer calories and packs plenty of protein compared to other meat.

Dried Fruits and Nuts

Dried fruits and nuts are a quick and healthy snack after a workout for all those who don’t have time to have a whole meal. Dried fruits and nuts are rich in both protein and carbs, and make the perfect combo to satisfy all your post-workout nutritional needs. Stay away from those mixes that contain chocolate and salt.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are packed with carbs, but they also contain potassium, magnesium and vitamins B6, C and D. Sweet potatoes are rich in iron, a mineral necessary to have adequate energy, which is particularly important after a heavy workout.

Eating the right foods after physical activity helps increase performance, increase the effects of exercising and bring our body back to normal functioning.
