Here are the two exercises that helped Carrie Underwood get her lean stems.
Exercise #1: Bulgarian Lunge
HOW TO DO IT: Stand about 3 feet in front of a bench, with your back facing the bench. Hold light weights in each hand.
Put your left foot on the bench, but make sure your right leg remains straight in alignment with your upper body.
Now descend slowly (much like in a regular lunge), and keep your right knee behind your right foot. Hold the position for 2 seconds, then extend your left right and return to the starting position.
Try to complete between 8 and 12 reps.
Exercise #2: Step-ups
HOW TO DO IT: Stand in front of a step that is around 10 inches tall, facing forward. Place your left foot in the middle of the platform and step up balancing your body for 2 seconds on your left leg.
Your right leg should be behind your body in order to stabilize your weight as it shifts.
Step down with your right leg first, then continue down with your left. One series of step-ups should last anywhere between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
